Duty Deferment Warehousing India: How an FTWZ Defers Customs Duty

How to store imported goods in a Free Trade Warehousing Zone without paying customs duty upfront, and pay only when the goods enter the domestic market.

Duty deferment warehousing in India lets an importer bring goods into a Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) and store them there without paying customs duty at the port of arrival. The duty is deferred, not waived: it becomes payable only if and when the goods are cleared out of the zone into the Domestic Tariff Area (DTA) for sale or consumption within India. Goods that are re-exported never attract Indian import duty at all.

Why Defer Duty Instead of Paying at the Port?

Paying duty on a full consignment at the port ties up working capital long before the goods are sold. Deferring it matches the cash outflow to the moment you actually need the stock.

  • Better cash flow on high-volume imports
  • Clear goods in smaller lots as demand arrives
  • No duty on goods that are eventually re-exported

How the Deferment Works

  • Arrival — cargo reaches the port with the FTWZ declared as its destination, so it moves on without a duty payment.
  • Storage under bond — the goods sit in the zone, where value-added work such as kitting, labeling, or repacking can be done without triggering duty.
  • Exit — duty is paid only on the portion removed into the DTA; goods leaving the country are simply re-exported.

The mechanics of that last step are covered in our guide to Domestic Tariff Area Operations. Storage periods and procedures are set by regulation and can change, so confirm current rules with your customs broker before planning a long hold.

Deferment in an FTWZ vs a Bonded Warehouse

Both defer duty, but an FTWZ also allows re-export hubs, value-added services, and trading flows that a standard bonded warehouse is not set up for. If you are choosing between the two, our FTWZ vs bonded warehouse comparison walks through the differences.

How Yimpilo Supports Duty Deferment

We handle the customs documentation that routes your cargo into our FTWZ at the port, keep inventory and duty records for every consignment, and manage the filings and transport when you are ready to clear part or all of a shipment into the DTA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is duty waived or only deferred?

Deferred. Duty becomes payable if the goods are cleared into the Domestic Tariff Area. Goods that are re-exported from the zone do not attract Indian import duty.

Can I clear only part of a consignment?

Yes. Goods can be cleared into the DTA in smaller lots as needed, so duty is paid only on what you actually remove.

Can goods be processed while duty is deferred?

Yes. Value-added services such as kitting, labeling, and repacking can be carried out inside the zone without triggering duty.
